Solar-ready does not mean solar-complete.

What “solar” on the box tells you—and the battery and charging questions it leaves open.

Three different starting points

A solar-capable opener, a kit with solar panels, and a working solar installation are three different purchases. The six packages in this comparison illustrate that distinction. Ghost Controls TSS1XP and TDS2XP include a 10W panel. TOPENS A5S and AD5S include two 10W panels, a controller and a charging adapter. Mighty Mule MM371W and MM571W can use solar, but the base packages need a separately purchased panel.

Those are box-content differences. They do not tell us whether a particular panel will keep a battery charged at your gate. A shaded entrance, winter conditions, accessory draw and the number of openings can change the power budget. We keep panel wattage visible as a package fact and do not turn it into a cycles-per-day guarantee.

Find the battery line before comparing prices

A panel charges a battery; it is not evidence that the package contains a battery. The Ghost XP kits here require a separately selected 12V battery. TOPENS specifies a separate 24V battery system, with a minimum 12Ah capacity for the solar-only configuration described on the product pages. That is a different shopping task from choosing one 12V battery.

Mighty Mule is not one uniform answer. The current MM371W model page excludes its battery, even though wider collection copy has suggested otherwise. The current MM571W model page includes an FM150 12V battery and its enclosure. Older package/manual descriptions can differ. Confirm the exact seller offer and its contents before treating either answer as final.

A charging adapter is not necessarily an alternative to a battery

The TOPENS charging adapter is easy to misread as proof that the opener can operate without its battery. The manufacturer’s comparison guidance distinguishes the supplied TS24-U charging adapter from the separate UPS01A power supply. In the configuration compared here, the adapter charges the battery; the battery remains a separate requirement.

Mighty Mule includes a transformer in these base packages. Its MM571W/572W manual says not to connect solar and transformer charging at the same time. Ghost’s current XP pages describe solar-only packages without an AC transformer. Do not mix instructions for older boards, different revisions or superficially similar kit names.

Add accessories before asking whether the solar setup is sufficient

Phone access, keypads and other accessories deserve their own line in the shopping list. They may add purchase cost and power demand. Ghost’s AXMC-R guidance, for example, ties support to controller generation and gives solar/battery recommendations beyond simply keeping the basic 10W kit unchanged. That does not make every accessory a mandatory upgrade; it means the exact accessory configuration needs its own check.

Use the comparison to identify what is missing from the manufacturer package, then take the saved checklist and the current manual to the seller or installer. Ask for confirmation of the battery system, panel placement, charging configuration and intended accessories. A complete shopping list is useful; an unsupported promise that a kit will run year-round is not.

  • Confirm exact model, revision and seller bundle.
  • Identify the battery voltage, capacity, enclosure and connection needs.
  • Check panel inclusion separately from solar compatibility.
  • Resolve sunlight, duty cycle and accessory demand with current manufacturer guidance.
